When I started, I hated the metronome. It exposed me. Every rush, every drag, every place I sped up because a passage scared me — the click was right there, indifferent, telling the truth.
I wanted to blame the click. The click was never wrong.
Timing is the one thing you can’t fake on an instrument. You can cover a weak tone with volume, a wrong note with confidence. But rush the beat and everyone feels it before they can name it.
So I stopped fighting the metronome and started using it. Slow. Honest. A thousand quiet repetitions until the clock lived in my hands instead of on the desk.
I think about that when I ship code too early, or sit on it too long. Both are timing problems. The work isn’t done when I’m bored or scared. It’s done when it’s on the beat.
