I Stopped Filling Every Empty Minute

I used to flinch at boredom.

A line at the store, a quiet minute,
and my hand found the phone before I’d decided to.

The empty moments never got to finish.

But I noticed something.
My best ideas never came mid-scroll.

They came in the gaps.
On the walk. In the shower.
In the dull, unfilled minute
I’d been so quick to kill.

So I started leaving the gaps alone.

Staring out the window.
Letting the line be boring.

It turns out an idea
needs a little empty space to arrive.

I’d been interrupting it for years.
