Alone in a room, I sounded great.
I was, of course, grading myself.
Then I played with other people.
And there it was —
I rushed the fast parts,
dragged the hard ones,
all the flaws I couldn’t hear solo.
The band was a mirror
I couldn’t argue with.
It stung a little.
It also made me better, fast,
because now I could hear what to fix.
I started seeking out players better than me.
They made my weaknesses audible.
You learn your real timing
in the company of others.
