Ten Minutes of Setup Saves the Whole Take

I’ve ruined good performances
by skipping the boring part.

An untuned string. A bad cable.
A setup I rushed because I wanted to play.

The music was there.
The foundation wasn’t.

Now I tune first, always.
I check everything before the first real note.

It’s ten unglamorous minutes
that protect the hour that follows.

I’ve come to love that part, honestly.
It’s a small act of respect
for the work about to happen.

You can’t play your best
on something you didn’t bother to ready.
