I Learned Speed by Playing Slowly

For years I tried to play fast
by playing fast.

It never worked. I just got faster at being sloppy.

Then a teacher slowed me down
to half speed, then half again.

It was humbling. And it was the answer.

Clean at slow speed
became clean at full speed,
almost on its own.

I think about that whenever I’m rushing —
in music, in work, in life.

The slow, careful version
is how the fast, smooth version gets built.
